9. The Ceylon Government also entrusted

to Mr. Young and Sir E.H. Ryan the task of recal-

culating the actual and registered pensions

on the basis of the new Tables, the expenses of

this work amounting to £326, which I consider to

be very reasonable. The Malayan Governments

have also decided to entrust the work of re-cal-

culating their pensions, to an actuary, and I en-

close copies of correspondence with Mr. Young in

this correction.

If you should decide to proceed further

with the matter of an actuarial investigation into

mortality experience, you will, no doubt, consider

whether the clerical staff available in the Colony

is adequate and sufficiently reliable to carry out

the considerable labour involved in the re-calculation

of the pensions (current and prospective)ion the basis

of the new 8% tables, having regard to the fact that

absolute accuracy is essential: or whether you would

of March would be equally applicable to the

Hong Kong revision.

11. I have commended to the considera-

tion of the Governor of the Straits Settle-

ments the suggestion contained in paragraph

3 of Mr Young's letter of the 24th of March

and have, in fact, suggested to him that Mr

Young should be asked to recalculate the

pensions up to the 31st of December, 1923.

If you should decide to proceed on similar

lines, the data in the Schedules should be

completed up to that date.
